Theoretical Subjects - Microbiology

Microbiology is about the microorganisms that live on and around us - and that can affect both the skin and the treatment environment. In this subject you learn to understand how bacteria, fungi and viruses behave, and how you handle them professionally in your work as a cosmetologist.

What will you learn?

You gain fundamental insight into:

  • The skin’s natural microflora
  • Bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites
  • Infection pathways and chains of infection
  • The role of the immune system
  • Prevention of infections in the clinic
  • The significance of microbiology for hygiene and safety

The subject gives you a deeper understanding of why hygiene is so important - and how you prevent skin problems and infection in your treatments.

Why is it important?

As a cosmetologist you work closely with the client’s skin and health. With knowledge of microbiology, you can take responsibility for protecting both the client and yourself. It enables you to make professionally sound decisions and build trust in your professional practice.

Teaching format

The teaching combines theory with cases and practical examples. You learn to think in terms of cause and effect, and how microscopic organisms play a role in skin health - both as friends and foes.
