Beauty education in Denmark - compare your options | Nordic Skin College

The beauty industry encompasses many different directions, and it can be hard to see which programme matches your interests, ambitions and life situation. Each path has its strengths, its limitations and its own career trajectory.

Here we give you an honest overview of the most popular educational paths within beauty in Denmark - so you can make an informed choice.

Cosmetologist / Skin therapist

What is it?

A cosmetologist is a skin specialist. The programme covers anatomy, physiology, dermatology, chemistry and a broad range of treatment techniques for face and body. You learn to analyse skin, choose the right treatments and products, and advise clients professionally.

Duration

12-24 months depending on whether you choose full-time or part-time. Most DKF-accredited programmes are 12-18 months full-time.

What you can work with

  • Your own clinic or employment at a skin clinic
  • Spa and wellness
  • Dermatology clinics (as an assistant)
  • Skincare consulting and product sales
  • Teaching and training
  • Medical aesthetics (with further education)

Career prospects and income

Cosmetologists have one of the broadest professional platforms in the beauty industry. Starting salary as an employee is typically DKK 25,000-30,000/month, but many establish their own clinic within a few years, where income depends on ambition, location and specialisation. Experienced cosmetologists specialising in device treatments or medical aesthetics can earn significantly more.

Who is it for?

You, if you are curious about science and skin as an organ. If you want to understand why things work - not just how. If you want to help people with real skin concerns and see lasting results.

Makeup artist

What is it?

A makeup artist works with cosmetic enhancement of the face. The programme focuses on colour theory, facial shapes, brush and product techniques, and creative expression. Some programmes include hair styling and special effects.

Duration

3-12 months for most programmes. There is everything from short courses to longer programmes with practical placements.

What you can work with

  • Bridal and event makeup (freelance)
  • Film, television and theatre
  • Fashion and photoshoots
  • Beauty consulting in retail
  • Teaching and workshops

Career prospects and income

Highly variable. Makeup artistry is primarily freelance-based, and income fluctuates with season, network and portfolio. The wedding season (May-September) is busy, the winter months quiet. Full-time income typically requires a broad network and multiple revenue streams (workshops, retail, events). Top professionals in fashion and film can earn well, but the path there is long.

Who is it for?

You, if you are creative, visually oriented and thrive with varying assignments. If you are comfortable with self-employment and fluctuating income. If you have a passion for aesthetics and trends.

Hairdresser

What is it?

The hairdressing programme is a vocational education (EUD) covering cutting, colouring, perming and styling. It is one of the most established and structured programmes in the beauty industry.

Duration

4 years (alternating between school and salon apprenticeship). There are also adult apprenticeship schemes of approximately 2 years for those with relevant experience.

What you can work with

  • Hair salon (employed or self-owned)
  • Styling for fashion, film and events
  • Product development and education for brands
  • Salon management

Career prospects and income

The hairdressing industry has collective agreements, and starting salary as a qualified stylist is approximately DKK 27,000-32,000/month. With your own salon or specialisation (colouring, extensions, barbering), you can increase your income. The industry is stable but competitive.

Who is it for?

You, if you are practically minded, social and enjoy craft. If you are willing to invest 4 years in a structured programme. If you enjoy the daily client relationship and the creative freedom of shaping a look.

Nail technician

What is it?

The nail technician programme focuses on nail extensions, gel nails, nail design and nail care. It is a short programme with a strong practical focus.

Duration

1-4 months for the foundation programme. Often supplemented with continuing education courses in new techniques.

What you can work with

  • Your own nail clinic or chair rental
  • Employment in a nail salon or beauty clinic
  • Bridal and event services
  • Nail design for fashion and media

Career prospects and income

Nails is a competitive market with many providers. Price pressure is intense in some segments. Those who succeed best specialise (nail art, medical nail conditions) or combine with other services. Income varies widely - from modest to quite good for the most sought-after specialists.

Who is it for?

You, if you are patient, detail-oriented and have fine motor skills. If you enjoy precision work and creative design on a small scale.

Body therapist

What is it?

A body therapist works with treatments from the neck down: massage, body wraps, cellulite treatments, waxing, peels and wellness rituals. The programme covers anatomy, physiology and a range of manual techniques.

Duration

6-12 months. Can often be combined with or built on top of a cosmetology programme.

What you can work with

  • Spa and wellness hotels
  • Your own clinic with a body focus
  • Combination with cosmetology training for a complete holistic profile
  • Health clinics and rehabilitation centres (with supplementary education)

Career prospects and income

The spa and wellness industry is growing, and demand for qualified body therapists is stable. Salary levels are similar to the cosmetologist’s when employed. The combination of facial and body treatments provides the broadest client base and most opportunities for independent practice.

Who is it for?

You, if you enjoy physical work with your hands. If you are interested in the body’s anatomy and wellbeing. If you want to work in spa and wellness, or combine with facial treatments for a complete profile.

How to choose?

Here are four questions that can help you narrow it down:

1. What interests you most?

  • Science and problem-solving -> cosmetologist
  • Creative expression and aesthetics -> makeup artist
  • Craft and social contact -> hairdresser
  • Precision and design -> nail technician
  • Physical work and wellness -> body therapist

2. How broad a platform do you want?

Some programmes give you a narrow specialism, others give you a broad foundation to build on. The cosmetology programme is the broadest within skin and beauty - it qualifies you for facial treatments, some body treatments, consulting and device-based treatments. Combined with a body therapy programme, you cover the full spectrum.

3. What does your finances look like?

Shorter programmes cost less and give a faster return, but also give a narrower profile. Longer programmes are a bigger investment, but typically open more career paths and higher income over time.

4. How independent do you want to be?

If the dream is your own clinic, the cosmetology and body therapy programmes provide the strongest foundation. If you prefer employment, the hairdressing programme’s collective agreement structure is an advantage.

Combination is strength

Many people in the industry have more than one qualification. A cosmetologist who is also a body therapist can offer holistic experiences. A makeup artist with a cosmetology background can advise on skincare, not just cover up problems. Think of your first programme as the foundation - not the final framework.
