What is a facial treatment? Complete guide from cosmetologists | NSC

A facial treatment is a professional skincare treatment that cleanses, nourishes and revitalises the skin of the face. It is the most popular treatment in our student clinic at Kongens Nytorv, and for good reason: a facial delivers results that cannot be achieved with home care alone.

What happens during a facial treatment?

A typical facial treatment at Nordic Skin College lasts 60-90 minutes and includes these steps:

  1. Skin analysis - your therapist assesses your skin type and any concerns
  2. Cleansing - thorough cleansing with professional products tailored to your skin
  3. Exfoliation - removal of dead skin cells to give the skin radiance and improve product absorption
  4. Deep cleansing - extraction of clogged pores (only if needed)
  5. Mask - a nourishing or hydrating mask that works for 15-20 minutes
  6. Serum and moisturiser - finishing care with active ingredients
  7. Sun protection - always SPF to finish (during the day)

Who is a facial treatment for?

In short: everyone. Regardless of skin type, age or gender, you can benefit from a professional facial. We see many different profiles in our clinic:

  • Teenagers with blemish-prone skin who need professional guidance
  • Adults 25-40 who want to prevent ageing and maintain healthy skin
  • Mature skin types 40+ who want anti-ageing treatments and a moisture boost
  • Men who are discovering the benefits of professional skincare
  • Stressed individuals who need a break and a skincare boost

Classic vs. specialised treatment - what is the difference?

Classic facial treatment (from 250 DKK at NSC)

The classic facial covers all the fundamental steps and suits most people. It is perfect as your first treatment or as regular maintenance.

Specialised treatments

In addition to the classic facial treatment, we offer treatments with specific areas of focus:

  • Diamond microdermabrasion - mechanical peeling with AHA that removes deep impurities and gives silky-smooth skin
  • Japanese lifting - stimulates collagen production and lifts the skin naturally
  • Chemical peel - controlled exfoliation with AHA/BHA acids
  • LED light therapy - red or blue light that respectively stimulates collagen or fights bacteria

How often should you have a facial?

For most people, we recommend a treatment every 4-6 weeks. This corresponds to the skin’s natural renewal cycle. But it depends on your skin:

  • Oily/blemish-prone skin: Every 3-4 weeks initially, then every 4-6 weeks
  • Normal skin: Every 6-8 weeks for maintenance
  • Dry/sensitive skin: Every 4-6 weeks with a focus on hydration and soothing ingredients
  • Anti-ageing: Every 3-4 weeks for optimal results

How to prepare

  • Avoid sun and sunbeds 48 hours before the treatment
  • No retinol 3-5 days beforehand (it makes the skin extra sensitive)
  • Come with clean skin - or don’t, we cleanse thoroughly as the first step
  • Tell your therapist about any allergies, medication or skin conditions

What does a facial treatment cost in Copenhagen?

Prices vary considerably:

TypeProfessional clinicNordic Skin College (student treatment)
Classic facial600-1,200 DKKFrom 250 DKK
Diamond microdermabrasion800-1,500 DKKFrom 300 DKK
Specialised treatment1,000-2,500 DKKFrom 275 DKK

At Nordic Skin College you receive professional treatments performed by cosmetology students under expert guidance from experienced teachers. The quality is the same - the price is lower because it is part of the training.

Student treatment vs. professional treatment

The most important thing to know: all student treatments take place under professional supervision from a qualified cosmetologist or teacher. The student has been through theory and practical training, and there is always an experienced professional present throughout the entire treatment.

The difference is primarily time - a student treatment takes a bit longer because the student is thorough and works under supervision. The products and methods are identical to a professional clinic.
