Student clinic vs. professional clinic - price, quality and experience | NSC
You may have spotted it: facial treatments from 250 DKK at a student clinic, while the same type of treatment costs 800-1,200 DKK at a professional clinic. The difference is significant, and the natural question arises: what is the catch? Is the quality lower? Do they use inferior products? Are you taking a risk?
Let us take it all apart and give an honest picture of what you can expect at each.
The price - why is the student clinic cheaper?
The lower price at a student clinic is not about inferior quality. It is about economics:
- No labour costs: The student is paying to be there (it is part of their training). A professional clinic pays its therapist a salary.
- Educational context: The student clinic is primarily a learning tool. Revenue covers product usage and facilities, not profit.
- Longer treatment time: The student works more slowly and thoroughly, which means fewer clients per day than in a professional clinic.
It is not a “deal” in the sense that someone has cut corners. It is a fundamentally different business model.
The products - are they the same?
Short answer: yes. At least at reputable schools.
At Nordic Skin College our students use the same professional product lines that established clinics use. Students need to learn to work with real products - it would be pointless to train them on cheap alternatives and then expect them to handle professional ranges in their future careers.
What it means for you
- The same active ingredients as in a professional treatment
- Products that are tested and approved for professional use
- Correct dosage and application (under guidance)
The only difference: you pay roughly half the price for products of the same quality.
Supervision - the big difference (in your favour)
Here is what most people do not know: in a student clinic there is more supervision, not less. And that is actually an advantage for the client.
How it works
- An experienced teacher (typically with 10-20+ years of industry experience) is present throughout the entire treatment
- The teacher monitors the student’s skin analysis, product selection and technique
- If the student is uncertain, they consult the teacher immediately
- The teacher checks the result and gives feedback - to both the student and to you as a client
Comparison with a professional clinic
At a professional clinic, you are alone with your therapist. They make all decisions independently, and there is no second opinion. In 99% of cases that is perfectly fine - they are qualified, after all. But it is worth noting that a student clinic technically gives you two professionals’ attention for the price of none.
Treatment quality - what can you expect?
Skin analysis
The student carries out a thorough skin analysis - often more detailed than at a professional clinic, because it is part of their learning process. They need to document what they observe and justify their choices to the teacher.
For you this means: you get a more thorough assessment of your skin type and condition, because the student has to explain their observations.
Treatment technique
Here is the honest assessment: a student’s hand technique is not at the level of a therapist with 15 years of experience. The movements may be slightly slower, the pressure a bit more cautious. But:
- All steps are performed correctly (the teacher ensures this)
- Product selection is professionally validated
- The treatment protocol is followed precisely
What you may lose in “flow” and practised technique, you gain in thoroughness and care.
Time spent
A student treatment typically takes 75-90 minutes for a treatment that normally lasts 60 minutes. The extra time is not spent waiting - it is spent on more thorough cleansing, longer mask time, and additional steps. You actually get more treatment for your money.
When does the student clinic make most sense?
The student clinic is an obvious choice if you:
- Want to try a facial treatment for the first time and would like to test it without investing 1,000+ DKK
- Want regular treatments but do not have the budget for professional prices every month
- Have schedule flexibility - student clinics typically have limited opening hours (daytime on weekdays)
- Value thoroughness over speed
- Want to support future professionals in their training
When is a professional clinic the better choice?
A professional clinic is more relevant if you:
- Have specific skin concerns that require experienced assessment and specialised treatments (e.g. advanced chemical peels, laser treatments)
- Want a particular therapist with documented expertise in your skin concern
- Have limited time and need evenings/weekends or shorter treatment duration
- Have very sensitive skin and prefer an experienced hand from start to finish
- Are seeking specific device-based treatments that are not part of the student clinic’s offering
Myths about student clinics
”They practise on you”
No. The student has been through theory and practical training (on models and fellow students) before they begin in the student clinic. When they treat you, they already have the fundamentals in place. They are learning to apply them in a real clinic context - that is something quite different from “practising."
"Mistakes can happen”
The risk of real errors is minimal, precisely because the teacher is present. In fact, there is an argument that the risk is lower than at a professional clinic: the student follows protocols to the letter (they dare not improvise), and the teacher catches any misunderstandings immediately.
”The products are cheaper”
As described: no. Professional products, professional results.
”It is only for people who cannot afford a proper treatment”
Student clinics are used by all sorts of people - students, pensioners, business professionals, celebrities. The only thing the clients have in common is that they know what they are getting: a professional treatment at a sensible price.
What our clients say
The most typical feedback we hear from clients in our student clinic:
- “I didn’t know it was a student - it was so professional”
- “I’ve never had a more thorough skin analysis”
- “I come here every month now - it’s the best investment”
- “My skin has never looked better, and I save half”
Many of our clinic clients have tried both and have chosen the student clinic as their regular destination - not out of necessity, but out of conviction.
A good experience in both settings
The most important thing is that you choose a place where you feel comfortable and where the treatment is tailored to your skin. Both student clinics and professional clinics can deliver fantastic results - it is about finding the right match.
Always ask:
- Are the therapists/students DKF-trained?
- Do they carry out a skin analysis before the treatment?
- Can they explain what they are doing and why?
- Do they use professional products?
If they can answer yes to all four, you are in good hands - whether it is a student clinic or an established clinic.
